CHAPTER SUMMARY:
After leaving home in Wisconsin and bussing cross-country, 18-year-old Lucas Sevilla (Anthony Keyvan) arrives at Bourbon Street Boarding in New York City run by a kind-hearted “house mom”, Carina (Kelly Lamor Wilson). As he settles into his new third-floor room, he discovers a hidden tape recorder beneath a loose floorboard. Pressing play, he hears the voice of Carter Lancaster (Joshua Colley), the room’s first occupant from the 90s. Carter reveals his plan to record one year of his life, leaving behind advice for future tenants— before ominously foreshadowing his own death.
Before Lucas even has a chance to process this mysterious discovery, his new housemates rush through his room and up to the roof. Only one, Kaleb (Adam Faison), stops to introduce himself. There’s an instant spark— kind of. Kaleb explains that the fire escape outside Lucas’ window is the only way to the rooftop, their favorite hangout. After spotting the cassette player, Kaleb also suggests Lucas might like B-Side, a nearby record store.
Later, Lucas gathers the courage to meet his housemates— Sadie (Alexandra Daniels), Olivia (Teala Dunn), and Ryan (Anthony Turpel)— who aren’t exactly welcoming. And things take an even darker turn when their ex-housemate, Joshua (Noah James), suddenly arrives on the roof— right as Lucas and Kaleb kiss. That’s when the truth comes out…
Joshua isn’t just the former tenant— he’s Kaleb’s boyfriend.
Heartbroken, Lucas retreats to his room, the only comfort left being Carter’s tapes.
But when he tries to listen to more… the cassette player breaks.
