Standout Lines:
“She was confident, after all. Confident... and conceited and arrogant and smug and vain. In short, the makings of someone who could make it work. Or die in the delusion.”
“For a moment, she became so lost in it all that she wondered if it were her final frontier. Perhaps there were greater accomplishments to be had in a place like this... a greater legacy, even. Beyond Earth. Beyond... all she left behind.”
“The message cut off. And the voice of Todd Quinn was lost, with it.”
From the Author:
From beginning to end, this story was a joy to write. And that’s always the first sign that I’m on the right track with something I love. It was a rollercoaster, and I was excited every day getting to work on it— navigating with the lead character where she ended up, what each jump meant, and how she would come to realize that she was moving through different realities.
I thought a lot about what telling a multiverse story might mean. The thing that kept popping into my mind was seeing reflections of ourselves and our choices mirrored back to us. I’ve experienced moments like that in my real life, in different ways. And each time its challenged me, made me reflect, and helped me grow. So what does it mean on this grand scale? It’s about meeting these moments that are both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Facing who we are, who we could’ve been, and who we can be… the echoes of each choice, path, and crossroad we’ve acted on. And how that’s gotten us to where we are today. The question then becoming… are we truly happy with that person, with our choices, and who we are becoming tomorrow?
I wanted to take a completely confident and sure-of-themself character, and break them down a bit. Not in any nefarious kind of way, or with any ill-intent, but dissecting an extreme version of some who set themselves on a very clear path, and has acted in every way toward furthering that. That type of person who is so focused on the singular path that they never take the time to look at the other options, and what different things might mean along the way. What happens when they’re forced to see the crossroads they ignored? The people the hurt or stepped over or didn’t consider? The other elements of a fulfilling albeit different life they hadn’t considered?
And in the end, even in facing what it all might add up to— even after Jennifer Wright learns, changes and grows— she’s (and we are) left to question where she ended up.
With all this, I have to of course give a huge shoutout to my Queen Kaley Cuoco. It’s a dream getting to work with her, and she was such a wonderful partner for bringing this story to life. I am and will forever remain in awe of her.
